Mumbai City Stay

Mumbai1 3 days/2 nights

Departs:
Mumbai daily
Grading: Easy

Mumbai is truly the financial capital of India and with a population of over sixteen million it offers a vibrant modernity and bustling diversity like no other city in Asia. Famed for Bollywood movies, terrible traffic and a cosmopolitan lifestyle not often found in India, Mumbai is an enthralling and surprisingly enjoyable destination with much to offer.

Day 1:

Arrive and transfer to your hotel

Day 2:
We visit Mani Bhavan, a former residence of Gandhi and now an interesting museum dedicated to his life and work. We visit a fascinating Jain temple and learn more about this unique religion before continuing on through Mumbai’s picturesque Hanging Gardens. We finish our tour of Mumbai with some of the city’s most famous sights of daily life, we visit the Dhobi Ghat, a huge municipal laundry where up to 5000 laundry men (or dhobi wallahs) daily clean clothes and return all in spotless condition to their rightful owners by a complicated and mysterious system of tagging.

Take in some of the city’s grand Gothic colonial architecture, a Mumbai feature. Around midday, we head to the train station to watch the Tiffin wallahs at work. Here, home cooked lunches are delivered to workers via a remarkable system unique to this city, the fresh cooked meal in its own ‘Tiffin’ container passing through the hands of a dozen or so carriers before arriving on its owner’s office desk ready for the midday meal!

Khajuraho Temples & Tigers

Khajuraho-Temples 3 days/2 nights

Departs:  Khajuraho daily
Grading: Easy to Moderate

Experience the history and diversity of Madhya Pradesh as we travel to the remote ancient town of Khajuraho, known for its remarkable temple complexes and discover the scenic splendor of Panna National Park on this memorable journey.

Day 1:
We visit the wonderfully detailed World Heritage-listed temples at Khajuraho, which are little known outside India. The temples themselves date back to the tenth century and were built by the Chandela dynasty. Each temple is carved in incredible detail with erotic scenes from the Kama Sutra and curvaceous Apsaras being two common themes. It is thought that the carvings were used to instruct rather than to titillate and also feature scenes of hunting, warriors, gods and goddesses.

Most impressive of all is how well the detailed carving of these temples has been preserved for over a thousand years. After exploring the Western group of temples, we return in the evening for a beautiful sound and light show at the temples.

Day 2:
The next morning we will depart from Khajuraho and drive to Panna National Park. Spread over 542 square kilometers, Panna is one of India’s many stunning national parks and is yet to be developed for mass tourism. The picturesque Ken River winds its way through the park, which boasts a variety of habitats from savannah grasslands to teak forests, and provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

In addition to leopards, spotted deer, langur monkeys, sambars and sloth bear, the park recently started a radio collaring project on its tiger population, estimated to be at around 35 or more and we have a chance of spotting one of these majestic creatures on our afternoon game drive. At our riverside lodge, we walk to the nearby Gond tribal village of Madhla and later relax with sunset views over the river, and the chance to admire the area’s birdlife including kingfishers, storks and owls.

Journey to Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer 4 days/3 nights

Departs:  Jodhpur daily
Grading: Moderate

Jaisalmer is without doubt one of India’s most romantic and fairytale locations. A huge, sand coloured fort rises from the surrounding Thar Desert plains like something from a fable. The fort is India’s last living fort – people still live, work and worship in the maze of narrow alleys of this towering walled community. Jaisalmer is a window on a fascinating and disappearing lifestyle.

Day 1:
Arrive Jaisalmer and transfer to your hotel.

Day 2:

We rise early this morning to observe the fort at its best – with the dusky pink colour of sunrise bathing its imposing walls. Enter into the fort for a walking tour through the network of tiny cobblestone lanes. See opposing havelis so close that housewives are able to chat across narrow streets, dodge the cows that seem to rule the fort and marvel at the impressive carving of the Jain temples.

Day 3:
Today you will have ample free time for your own exploration of the fort – part of the pleasure in visiting Jaisalmer is just to wander and soak up the atmosphere. It is also fantastic for shopping, boasting textiles, antiques, jewellery and carvings amongst its wares. In the late afternoon we drive into the Thar Desert to a small Rajasthani village and take a camel trek to watch sunset over the sand dunes.

Day 4:
Transfer back to Jodhpur or your next destination.
